As a public figure known and respected throughout the UK and internationally, Michael is frequently invited to be a public speaker at a range of different events and occasions. His informal, relaxed and entertaining manner, combined with the breadth of knowledge and experience that he has about not only the workings of the hospitality industry but also about the challenges that life can unexpectedly bring means that he can give thoughtful discussion and bring his unique ideas and point of view to any number of topics.

While Michael can turn his enquiring mind to most any subject, there are three areas of special interest and expertise:

The future of food and farming in a sustainable world
Michael believes that the future of food and the challenge of feeding our planet depends on an equitable and sustainable food system that works for all: producer and consumer alike. How can this be addressed practically while considering the need for affordable food and also for keeping our planet safe is a topic that gives much food for thought.

Michael works with local farmers and food producers to champion indigenous & heritage of breeds, and promote local produce.  He works with the Devon County Show and local farming community to celebrate bio-diversity; promote the protection of our ancient woodlands, orchards, wetlands and grasslands; and is part of the conversation regarding regenerative farming methods and the ever growing need for sustainable food production.

Food, provides us with an opportunity to celebrate the bounty of our lands, gifting the regional chefs with a unique and precious gift, who in turn curate wonderful meals that create a sense of place and taste even. Creating food memories that live on beyond the region and indeed last a lifetime.

Overcoming adversity to follow your dreams
Michael’s story is well known – how he had to overcome a shocking physical accident to rebuild not only his career but also his life. Michael is a true role model and an inspiration to others. He has a strong belief that we all need to hold on to our dreams and never let them go. With perseverance, determination, hard work, and the will to succeed, he is an example that dreams really can come true.

Diversity and inclusion. A brave new world
The importance of living in a multi-cultural world and appreciating what people from all walks of life, background, and nationality can bring is something that Michael has always highly valued. He firmly believes that diversity and inclusion are not things that businesses should play lip service to; rather both should be embraced and integrated wholly to create a richer and more diverse working environment that benefits all. This includes celebrating diversity in all its forms, including race, gender, age, ability, sexual orientation, and socio-economic background, to foster a culture of equity and belonging.
